Penglipuran village comes from the acronym of the words pengeling and pura which means remembering the holy place (ancestors). The villagers came from Bayung Gede village, Kintamani who immigrated permanently for some reason to Kubu Bayung village, settled down and managed cultural wisdom until finally this village was inaugurated as a tourist village known as Penglipuran village.

At the beginning of its inauguration as a tourist village, in 1995, Penglipuran Village received the Kalpataru award. Because Penglipuran Village was considered able to maintain and improve 75 hectares of bamboo forest and 10 hectares of other vegetation that now characterizes the village. In addition, the village was also able to maintain the cultural customs of its ancestors as well as its town planning and traditional buildings. In fact, Penglipuran Village has also been inaugurated as the cleanest village in the world along with Giethoorn Floating Village in the Dutch Province and Mawlynnong Village in India.

The population is spread over 76 yards divided on average on each side of a total of 112 hectares.
